For over 20 years, AAWC
has been a Breed Club dedicated to hosting lure coursing trials for all
Sighthound breeds in the San Antonio - Austin - Dallas/Fort Worth areas.
Never a large club, it presently has less than a dozen members that put
on more ASFA trials in our geographical region than any other
performance or breed-designated club in Texas. In 2007, AAWC was
listed in the ASFA TOP 30 for the number of trials hosted by all clubs
around the country, and we generally can expect between 40 and 60 hounds
to be in attendance at any given trial.
In the early days of the
Club, coursing was held at the famous Ratama Park in San Antonio, Texas.
When the park decided in put in soccer fields and additional bleachers,
however, AAWC had to find a new field on which to run. In 2000, they found
Triple Crown Dog Academy in Hutto, Texas (just North of Austin on
Interstate Hwy 35), and this exemplary facility has been our proverbial
coursing-home for over 8 years.

In 2007, AAWC proudly expanded its
performance activities to include Whippet straight-track racing under
the privileges of the Continental Whippet Alliance. We are the
first Club to offer CWA Racing to Whippets South of Kentucky, East of
California and West of Illinois. This is to say, Whippets used to
have to go a long distance to compete in CWA. But now longer as
AAWC is committed to hosting two weekends of racing a year.
In addition to racing, AAWC aspires to
add conformation specialties to its repertoire of Whippet activities,
and it plans to host an AKC recognized "A Match" in the Spring 2008.
Ideally, by offering racing, coursing and conformation events, AAWC will
be able to actualize the potential versatility that the breed is so well
known to possess. Our future, in this regard, is bright, and our
members remain dedicated to coursing as they also remain committed to
the Whippet breed itself.
