OUR CLUB AND OUR PURPOSE

Established in 1984, Alamo Area Whippet Club is an organized group of Whippet owners and enthusiasts seeking to protect and advance the interests of the breed and encourage sportsmanlike competition at formalized events involving Whippets.  We urge our members and breeders to accept the standard of the breed as approved by the American Kennel Club as the only standard of excellence by which Whippets shall be judged and we encourage interest in the humane welfare of all animals.

WHAT IS A WHIPPET?

OUR HISTORY AND OUR FUTURE

Since 1984, AAWC has been a Breed Club dedicated to hosting lure coursing trials for all Sighthound breeds in the San Antonio - Austin - Dallas/Fort Worth areas.  Never a large club, we presently have less than twenty five members who put on more lure coursing trials in our geographical region than any other performance or breed-designated club in Texas.  In 2007 and 2008, AAWC was listed in the ASFA TOP 10 for both number of trials hosted and number of entries received by all clubs around the country, and we generally can expect between 40 and 60 hounds to be in attendance at any given trial.

In 2007, AAWC proudly expanded its performance activities to include Whippet straight-track racing under the privileges of the Continental Whippet Alliance. We are the first Club to offer CWA Racing to Whippets South of Kentucky, East of California and West of Illinois. This is to say, Whippets used to have to go a long distance to compete in CWA. But no longer as AAWC is committed to hosting two weekends of racing a year.

Finally, in 2009, AAWC will host its first AWC approved and AKC recognized Whippet breed specialty in conjunction with the summer San Antonio circuit.  Ideally, by offering coursing, racing and conformation events, AAWC will advance the unique and valuable versatility that our breed is so well known to possess.
